As the ribbon travels from child to child, it connects some of the most common health conditions and silent struggles our young ones face. The Ribbon is a reminder and symbol of our shared humanity to care for others and foster relationships—forming a community bonded by courage and empathy.

Threads of Purpose

The purpose behind The Ribbon is to bring visibility to pediatric medical conditions while honoring every child who has faced a diagnosis. Each page invites readers on a journey filled with rich, vibrant colors and intentional details that celebrate the uniqueness of every condition represented. The Ribbon carries an even deeper purpose–it weaves children together through inclusion, perseverance, acceptance and compassion!

Threads of Inspiration

The inspiration for The Ribbon is tied to an innocent misunderstanding after our son's third grand mal seizure. After three days in the PICU, he arrived at a baseball tournament to find his teammates wearing purple ribbons on their hats. Upon completion of the tournament, James tearfully expressed confusion surrounding the gesture.  In his innocence, he believed the ribbon stood for something entirely different, and the weight of that misunderstanding stayed with us.

The Word Weaver & Visual Magician 

Beth Seidl grew up in Iowa, where her love of storytelling and reading took root and steadily shaped her creative writing. She was deeply influenced by her grandfather, Dr. Jim Karabatsos, an English professor at Creighton University, her dynamic and poetic middle school English teacher; and her mother, whose tireless editing continues to shape her work. After receiving her degree in English, she traveled the United States alongside her husband who proudly served in the United States Army. Although she was busy raising her three boys, she never lost her passion to put pen to paper, carrying it with her in every season of life. Today, you can find her back in Iowa on a small acreage with two dogs, one rabbit, twelve chickens and a picturesque view of the sun setting while her family plays an intense game of wiffle ball. Her debut children’s book, The Ribbon, was written for children and families navigating a medical diagnosis, with the hope of fostering unity and representation. 

Hannah Roser is an Illustrator born in Rochester, NY where she attended Rochester Institute of Technology to study illustration. Hannah currently resides in Southern Pines, NC where she works closely with local businesses in and around Moore County. Her creative design work, editorial illustration and narrative artworks have been featured in serval collaborative projects and art initiatives. Hannah aims to create playful worlds, that are fully saturated with color. When Hannah isn’t doodling on her iPad, you can find her walking her dogs, taking a yoga class or sketching in a hammock beneath the pine trees.
